In this article, I will describe a little about what trauma is and what consequences it has on us.

WHAT IS TRAUMA?

Trauma is not just what happened to you, but what happens inside of you after you experience it. It is a silent aftershock that can hide as symptoms in the body, mind and heart. Trauma is not always visible on the outside, but it shapes the way a person experiences themselves, others and the world. It is not just a memory of the past, but sometimes it lives in the present like an imperceptible shadow that affects our thoughts, feelings and relationships. A traumatic event can be so overwhelming that the nervous system, where the trauma is stored, cannot process it. Thus, trauma ruptures our experience of safety.

TOO MUCH IS TOO MUCH

Trauma occurs when a person encounters something that their inner resources are not sufficient for – when something happens too much, too quickly or too much too soon. On the other hand, it can also be caused by something too little for too long (for example, lack of care or connection). Trauma can develop as a result of physical injury or a threat to physical integrity. It can also arise from mental, emotional and spiritual abuse. Sometimes trauma is caused by a single moment – a blow that breaks basic security. Sometimes it is a long-term series of experiences that erode the belief that the world or our environment is not a benevolent place. A traumatic experience can be any event that a person experiences as dangerous. Trauma does not always scream about its existence, sometimes it whispers in the form of withdrawal, a reduction in the sphere of influence in life, a numbing of emotions or a constant state of alertness.

Trauma can change the way a person experiences themselves. It can rob us of the ability to feel safe in our own bodies, turning emotions into enemies that either explode or freeze. Trauma can also affect memories: some things disappear, others are recorded distortedly, and some moments seem to happen over and over again.

WHOLENESS

Trauma is not a universal experience. What breaks one person does not necessarily affect another in the same way. How deeply trauma penetrates depends on many factors: a person’s temperament, relationships, life situation, and whether someone was there to comfort them when the world became too heavy to bear.

However, trauma does not always arise only from major dramatic events. It can creep into life unnoticed, due to a lack of love, security, or understanding. It can be sudden, but also a slow alienation from oneself. When trauma cuts off contact with oneself and others, a person may not even realize that they are living through protective shells.

The effects of trauma are not only psychological, they live in the body. The human nervous system can remain in a tense state of readiness or, on the other hand, shut down and close down. Trauma can make the world unpredictable and the self a place where it is not good to be. The consequences of trauma can include, for example, weakened self-esteem and self-confidence, a decline in quality of life and a narrowing of choices. Trauma causes feelings of helplessness, vulnerability, insecurity and loss of control. If trauma is not dealt with, life can become increasingly negative, and a person can become a victim of their own life.

Recovery is a journey back to yourself. Not erasing the past, but gently rewriting it. It is a silent but powerful change, where trauma no longer shackles you, but becomes part of your story. Every small step towards safety, connection and freedom is meaningful, and it is in this moment, that your future begins to take shape.

Your story is not over! There is still joy to be found!
